Cleaning Tips For Different Types Of Carpet Stains

By SuperUser Account on 2/27/2017

A carpet can become dirty over a period of time owing to the increased foot traffic and presence of children and pets. It is necessary to deal with any kind of stains or spots on the carpet immediately before they become permanent. Although regular vacuum cleaning can help in extracting the dust from your carpet, it is essential to get in touch with a professional carpet cleaning company for a thorough cleaning.

Below is a list of some cleaning tips for different types of carpet stains:

Pet stains: Blot dry any wet area and use a product specifically formulated for pet stains. You can even use a strong laundry detergent mixed with water and spray it on the pet stain to remove it completely. Later on, white vinegar or white wine mixed in equal quantities with water can be used to deodorize your carpet. Rinse with warm water and blot dry to complete the cleaning process.

Ink stains: Isopropyl alcohol works best for ink stains and can make your carpet look shiny and gleaming again. Dab a generous amount of isopropyl alcohol on a white cloth and put it on the ink stain. Do not rub the cloth as this can spread the ink further and destroy your carpet. After a few minutes, use a vacuum cleaner to remove the excess moisture. Some types of hairsprays or nail polish removers also contain a high amount of alcohol and can be used in a similar manner to get rid of ink stains. The process needs to be repeated to get the best results.

Coffee stains: Dry the spot using a white cloth and apply a mixture of vinegar, water and a mild non-bleach detergent. Rinse the area and repeat as required depending on the stain. You can even use market bought cleaners for coffee stains but make sure they are not harmful for your carpet.

Blood stains: It is important to use cold water instead of hot water while removing blood stains from your carpet. Cold water will prevent the blood from coagulating and seeping deep into the carpet fibers. Use a mixture of a liquid dish detergent that is strong enough to remove grease along with cold water and spray on the stain. Moisten the stain completely and blot dry using a paper towel to soak the blood completely. Repeat the steps as necessary.

Glue, wax and gum: In order to remove glue residue, dampen a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and dab it on the carpet. Carefully wipe the gum once it is completely wet and repeat the procedure if required. On the other hand, wax and gum should be completely frozen with ice before breaking them with a blunt object. Vacuum clean the spot and blot dry the carpet with a clean towel.
